Pezeshkian: Iran’s foreign policy based on détente, expansion of ties with world countries

President Pezeshkian made the remark in a meeting with Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

The Iranian president said that the Islamic Republic’s main foreign policy approach is détente as well as the expansion of interactions with all world countries on the basis of mutual understanding and respect, adding that he himself seeks to resolve political differences and misunderstandings and to adopt preventive approaches.

“I am seeking to resolve disputes and misunderstandings and adopt preventive approaches in politics. The critical and complex regional conditions require such an approach to choose the right solutions for addressing its challenges and to steer the region towards security and stability”, he added.

The Iranian president referred to the Zionist regime’s assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, a day after Pezeshkian’s inaugural.

"While my slogan in the presidential election was peace, friendship, and brotherhood with the entire world, the Zionist regime, in an effort to incite further conflict and expand instability and insecurity in the region, assassinated Martyr Haniyeh in Tehran one day after the inauguration ceremony, a move that is condemned as inhumane under all international norms and regulations."

The Zionist regime is seeking to drag Iran into war, Pezeshkian said, calling on international organizations and independent countries to compel the regime to stop its warmongering policies in West Asia and stop its crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.

“We believe that Norway's efforts in this regard can be effective”, said the president.

Norway’s prime minister, for his part, described Pezeshkian’s détente policy as a positive change, saying that Norway is willing to expand relations with Iran.

Jonas Gahr Støre also said that Norway is ready to use all its capacities to reduce disagreements and enhance contacts between Iran and Europe.

He expressed concern over the deepening crisis in the region, saying that Norway recognizes Palestinians’ right to establish an independent state.

“We also call for an immediate halt to the war and the establishment of a ceasefire in Gaza, and we will make efforts to achieve this”, the Norwegian premier added.
