Iran’s president on Saturday stressed the importance of the cooperation of the private sector and foreign investors in the development of ports as well as rail and road transport infrastructure.
President Masoud Pezeshkian was speaking at a meeting which was held to assess the situation of the country’s transport infrastructure and regional transport corridors.
He emphasized the need for accelerating the implementation of a border corridor project with the Azerbaijan Republic and finalizing the construction of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The Iranian president also emphasized the necessity of the private sector’s investment in transport projects, saying that in addition to railway and its related equipment such as locomotives, ports also provide a significant capacity for investment by the private sector and foreign investors.
The president also referred to the agreements reached regarding the acceleration of the Shalamcheh-Basra route during his visit to Iraq earlier this year, noting that the route is of great significance to Iran, and that Iraqi government officials have also emphasized the need for its execution and completion.
Pezeshkian asked the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development to finalize preparations for cooperation with Russia on development of road and rail transport infrastructure.
He specified that in the transport sector, Iran’s priority is to increase port capacities, develop railway lines, and supply heavy road construction machinery.
Supplying electricity, gas exchange, and developing industries as well as exchanging petroleum products and petrochemicals are among other priorities, he added.
Pezeshkian also noted that his government focuses on transit of goods through roads and railways, adding that these routes should be upgraded.
