President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran’s active presence in major regional blocs reflects Tehran’s firm determination to expand relations with their member states, describing the Eurasian Economic Union as a key pillar of the Islamic Republic’s economic diplomacy.
The Iranian president’s message was read out by Minister of Industry, Mines, and Trade Mohammad Atabak at the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday.
The president emphasized that one year of free trade with the EAEU has created exceptional opportunities, stressed that Iran maintained active engagement with the bloc despite two imposed wars over the past year, and proposed an independent financial mechanism to counter sanctions.
Reflecting on the past year, President Pezeshkian characterized trade interactions with EAEU members as highly productive. However, he stressed that realizing the full potential of this partnership requires more than current trade volumes; it necessitates the establishment of robust financial infrastructure.
The president called for the immediate implementation of national currency exchange mechanisms and independent payment systems to insulate member states from unjust, external sanctions. He reiterated Iran’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the union to build a powerful region based on national sovereignty and energy security.
Addressing recent regional developments, President Pezeshkian declared that while diplomatic negotiations with Washington were ongoing, Iran faced an illegitimate military assault by the US and the Israeli regime, a move he described as a betrayal of the diplomatic process.
He detailed the catastrophic impact of these attacks, citing civilian casualties, including educators and children, and the deliberate destruction of critical infrastructure such as energy grids, transport hubs, and healthcare facilities. These actions, he argued, not only violated international law but also severely disrupted the region’s vital economic corridors.
Expressing frustration at the failure of international bodies to condemn these provocations, the president urged the global community to address the ongoing tragedies in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran before such instability spreads further.
Despite these provocations, President Pezeshkian underscored that Iran remains dedicated to shaping a new regional order built on dignity, security, and prosperity. By extending a hand of friendship to neighbors and actively participating in initiatives like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Iran is prioritizing sustainable, shared growth, he said.
The future belongs to nations that pave the path for progress through mutual trust and synergy, he emphasized, reaffirming that regional economic convergence remains the ultimate key to countering the conspiracies of disruptive, extra-regional powers.
According to the Iranian president, the EAEU meeting reflects the shared determination of Iran and the member states of the bloc to expand strategic cooperation in a range of vital areas, including trade, energy, transportation, and emerging technologies.
