Speaking at the Supreme Council for Environmental Protection on Monday evening, Dr Hassan Rouhani stressed that our lives depend on the environment and its protection must be done seriously and decisively, adding, "If the environment is endangered, the health of society and social issues and even social security will be affected”.

The President described the right to life and a proper life in a healthy environment as one of the social rights and one of the basic principles of citizenship rights and added, "Environmental protection is not a priority to choose but a definite matter and is therefore a duty, so protecting this important issue requires the participation of elites, people and institutions is in the form of long-term plans”.

The President pointed out that with environmental concerns and the need for more attention to the country's natural resources, the government has taken various measures and has achieved relatively good results, adding, "The Supreme Council for Environmental Protection is both moving towards protecting environmental issues and facilitating the development of the country”.

The President continued, "In order to reduce air pollution, measures such as eliminating polluted petrol produced in petrochemicals and supplying Euro 4 and 5 petrol for all citizens to benefit from this clean product, eliminating thousands of air polluting vehicles and converting carburettor motorcycles into injector ones are among the government’s measures”.

Emphasising that the heavy shadow of COVID-19 should not cause the important issue of air pollution in metropolitan areas to be neglected in the cold season of the year in the days of inversion that we faced in previous years, the President said, "Municipalities and relevant agencies should plan to take the necessary steps to prevent heavy and persistent pollution. Especially this year, when the outbreak of coronavirus has affected most parts of the country”.

Dr Rouhani mentioned the issue of waste as another important environmental issue and said, "Waste management and its impact on the environment is multifaceted. The first issue of waste management is culture building for the society. In today's world, leaving waste in nature or destroying it and burning it is a multifaceted harm, because this waste can have various benefits for nature and humans instead of being harmful”.

Dr Rouhani described environmental degradation and its threats as a major challenge for the country, saying, "The Supreme Council for Environmental Protection is also working to facilitate the country's development, while resolutely protecting environmental issues”.

The President said, "The issue of the environment, in addition to complex and intertwined internal factors, has also been greatly influenced by external factors. The extensive consequences of oppressive sanctions can be seen even in this vital area, and efforts should be made gradually to lift them”.
