Speaking on Sunday at a ceremony marking beginning of the academic year, Dr Rouhani said, “This ceremony means respecting science, knowledge, research and technology and the addressee of this respect are our dear professors and students”.

Referring to the recent hearing in The Hague, the President added, “Some of the figures in this hearing were graduated from University of Tehran”.

“As Imam Khomeini (RA) used to say, university can be the origin of developments and the symbol of authority, which the Supreme Leader has also reiterated,” continued Rouhani.

He also said, “If today, a manager is subject to criticism, we have to consider it a criticism towards the university, because these managers have been trained in these universities”.

On the role of hope in the country and the society, the President continued, “The reason of our achievements in the 11th Government was hope of future and people’s views about the future”.

Stating that the main reason for the 11th Government’s success was hope, he said, “Actors, directors, writers and all people had hope of future and knew that they would not have to wait for permits”.

He also said that over-criticism could be fruitless, adding, “Criticising more than enough can be fruitless, but enough criticism is both fruitful and necessary”.

“Some professors send letters to me, which I read and respond; and some voice their opinions in interviews and I listen to them too; but sometimes, too much salt ruins the food,” he continued.

Stating that universities should criticise and question the government, Dr Rouhani added, “There is no doubt about this. But I ask them to criticise and question based on enough information about the matter”.

He also said, “When we criticise, we should know what condition our country is in,” adding, “One should consider the age of the person to whom they are advising to exercise; we can’t give everybody a one-size-fits-all programme”.

Today, we need hope in the future more than anything in our society, said Rouhani, adding, “We should give each other hope and help each other”.

“In the last 40 years of the history of the United States, the current administration is the most vengeful government towards Iran, Iranians and the Islamic Republic. Of course, enmities existed, but now, the worst have gathered in the White House,” he continued.

The President added, “They have started their work against the Iranian nation with a psychological war, and economic war is their mid-term goal. Waging war against the efficiency of the system is their third goal and delegitimisation of the system is their ultimate goal”.

Stating that the great Iranian nation will overcome these conspiracies with unity and integrity, Dr Rouhani said, “We can beat the United states in many fields. Nobody in the world, apart from a few countries, claims that the United States’ decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was right”.

“Even those who are very conservative, express regret,” said the President, adding, “Your heard the speeches and addressed at the recent meeting of the UNGA. Mr Trump even chaired a UNSC session to get support for its policies against Iran, but all the other 14 members supported the nuclear deal”.

“We will withdraw from the deal whenever we want to. Withdrawal is like destroying a wall, which is very easy. JCPOA staying in place or not is not important; what is important is our national interests and national security”.

He continued, “Everyone in the world knows that the United States has lost this legally, politically and when violating international commitments is considered; but we have won”.
