Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian said that his trip to New York, where he attended the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, provided him with a good opportunity to clarify the Islamic Republic’s stance on international issues, and to take steps toward boosting ties with other countries.
He made the comment as he arrived back in Tehran on Thursday, elaborating on the meetings he held with world leaders during his three-day stay in New York.
“If we had wanted to make a trip for each of these meetings, it would have required considerable time. Therefore, this trip was a great opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest”, Pezeshkian said.
Iran’s nuclear deal, named the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was one of the issues that was discussed with European officials, the president said, adding that further discussions were agreed to be held.
European leaders agreed that the US violated the 2015 nuclear deal, he said, noting that issues related to sanctions imposed on Iran would be pursued in specialized sessions.
Pezeshkian also said that agreements were reached regarding the establishment of joint commissions to explore ways to strengthen economic, security, political, and cultural cooperation with countries such as China.
He further referred to his meeting with Iranian expatriates in the US, saying that the meeting was aimed at correcting the untrue image that Western media have presented about the situation in Iran.
The meeting also aimed to facilitate Iranian expats’ travel to their homeland, Pezeshkian added.
As to consultations with officials of other countries and international organizations on Iran’s stance on the war on Gaza and Lebanon, the president stated that Islamic countries agreed to hold a meeting to make appropriate decisions.
Pezeshkian also said that some European leaders condemned the massacre of innocent women and children by the Zionist regime, and argued it is the US that must resolve the issue.
