Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for accelerating the implementation of agreements between Tehran and Moscow and expanding cooperation in energy, transportation, trade and power generation, saying the two countries can help strengthen regional peace, sustainable security and a multilateral international order.
President Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tehran on Monday, expressing satisfaction with the development of relations between the two countries and calling for closer political and diplomatic coordination.
The Iranian president referred to his recent meetings and phone conversations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, saying bilateral understandings and joint cooperation programs were being actively pursued. He expressed hope that his upcoming visit to Moscow would help translate existing agreements into practical outcomes.
President Pezeshkian also thanked Russia’s president, government and people for their positions and support during the recent war imposed by the US and the Israeli regime, stressing the importance of continued mutual support and closer political and diplomatic cooperation.
He highlighted agreements concerning the Caspian Sea and trade, saying they provided opportunities to deepen economic and regional ties. He called for agreements on energy, transportation and power plant cooperation to enter the implementation stage through clear operational mechanisms and timelines.
Addressing regional developments, President Pezeshkian condemned recent Israeli and US aggression against Iran. He said the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, military commanders, scientists and schoolchildren, as well as attacks on Iran’s infrastructure, had violated international legal principles, arguing that the attacks occurred while the Islamic Republic was pursuing dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
President Pezeshkian said Iran opposed any country’s attempts to impose its will on other nations through coercion. He called for an international order based on mutual respect, national rights, constructive cooperation and multilateralism, adding that Tehran shared common perspectives with Moscow on these principles.
The president also stressed the importance of neighborhood diplomacy and stronger ties among Muslim countries. He said Iran was ready to resolve regional disagreements through dialogue, mutual understanding and regional mechanisms.
President Pezeshkian further argued that US military bases in the region contributed to tensions, instability and insecurity. He said Iran welcomed joint initiatives with regional countries on peace, security, economic development, cultural and scientific cooperation, and people-to-people relations.
He identified BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as important platforms for expanding economic, political and security cooperation. He said Iran and Russia could use these frameworks to facilitate trade, develop transport and transit infrastructure, and strengthen regional cooperation.
Foreign Minister Lavrov, in turn, briefed President Pezeshkian on his meetings with senior Iranian officials during his visit to Tehran. He said the discussions had covered political, economic, commercial and cultural relations, with both sides emphasizing the need to accelerate existing agreements.
The Russian official identified oil and gas, transportation, energy, communications and media, cultural exchanges, and scientific and academic cooperation as key areas for further collaboration.
He also emphasized overlapping Iranian and Russian positions on international issues and the importance of continued diplomatic consultations to promote peace and security. Referring to agreements concerning the Caspian Sea, he called for closer coordination to protect the two countries’ interests and strengthen regional stability.
