Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and resolving the region’s ongoing conflict through diplomacy, while opposing unilateralism in international affairs.

Iran, Russia presidents pledge to deepen ties, pursue diplomatic solutions

The two presidents met on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit and the Caspian Sea environmental summit in Turkmenistan on Thursday.

During the meeting, President Pezeshkian welcomed the growing engagement between Tehran and Moscow, highlighting progress in trade, economic and people-to-people relations. He stressed Iran’s determination to strengthen bilateral ties within the framework of their agreed joint strategic program and expressed hope that cooperation would accelerate across various fields.

The Iranian president also called for a stronger international commitment to multilateralism, warning that the United States was seeking to impose its policies and positions on other countries. He praised Moscow’s opposition to unilateral approaches and said regional and global affairs should be guided by cooperation rather than the dictates of a single power.

Addressing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, President Pezeshkian said Iran would remain committed to diplomacy despite repeated US attacks during negotiations. He said Tehran had revised its proposals in response to new American proposals and would finalize and consolidate both sides’ positions through intermediaries once the proposals were ready.

President Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its positions on regional issues and at the United Nations, saying Iran sought an end to the war and respect for the Iranian people’s rights under international law. He added that a unilateral approach would not provide a viable path forward.

President Putin, in turn, said Moscow’s position on the war on Iran was clear and that Russia would make every effort to resolve it through diplomacy.

The Russian president also welcomed the expanding strategic and people-to-people ties between the two countries and conveyed his greetings and wishes for health and success to the Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
