Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for the implementation of agreements reached during his recent visit to India, saying Tehran and New Delhi can use their joint economic commission to establish a roadmap for long-term strategic cooperation.
Speaking at a ceremony to receive the credentials of India’s ambassador, Shri Vishvesh Negi, President Pezeshkian described relations between Iran and India as historic and friendly. He stressed the need to put the understandings reached during his recent visit to India into practice as soon as possible.
President Pezeshkian said his visit featured talks with senior Indian officials and reached understandings between the two countries. He said he had emphasized that those agreements should quickly move into implementation.
The Iranian president highlighted cooperation within BRICS, saying agreements reached through the bloc, particularly in economic cooperation and multilateralism, should be pursued and expanded.
Referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on convening the Iran-India Joint Economic Commission soon, President Pezeshkian said the commission should meet soon to examine ways of expanding bilateral trade and economic and financial cooperation.
He said the commission could provide a framework for building a strategic, long-term roadmap for bilateral cooperation and establishing mechanisms to unlock the potential in Tehran-New Delhi relations.
President Pezeshkian also underlined the regional importance of stronger ties, saying expanded cooperation would benefit Iran and India and contribute to peace, stability and security across the region.
He said Iran was interested in long-term engagement with India in various fields, saying the two countries’ historical ties provided a strong foundation for deeper cooperation.
The president further stressed the role of diplomatic missions in advancing bilateral relations, saying the ambassadors could help facilitate interactions, follow up on agreements and activate cooperation opportunities.
Ambassador Negi said President Pezeshkian’s recent visit to India would open a new chapter in bilateral relations. He pledged to pursue his mission with the goal of increasing and deepening trade ties between the two countries.
The ambassador added that he hoped, with the cooperation of his colleagues in Iran, to increase bilateral trade and further activate the existing economic and commercial potential of Iran-India relations.
