Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed that security and development are inseparable, saying lasting security in the Persian Gulf and its waterways depends above all on cooperation, responsibility and active participation by regional countries.
In a message marking World Maritime Day, President Pezeshkian described the sea as more than a stretch of water for Iran, calling it a divine blessing and an integral part of the country’s history, identity and life, as well as a major resource for its present and future.
He said Iran’s long coastline in the north and south and its location along major regional routes have made it an important center of maritime trade and shipping. He added that maritime activity is a key pillar of economic growth, regional development, employment and international connectivity.
President Pezeshkian emphasized that security and development are inseparable. Secure seas, ports and transport routes facilitate trade and economic activity, while economic development strengthens national capabilities.
He said the Islamic Republic of Iran is seriously pursuing its responsibility to maintain security and stability along regional waterways and safeguard maritime shipping and trade, drawing on the capabilities and experience of its naval forces and all those working in the maritime sector.
Referring to the Strait of Hormuz, he described it as one of the world’s most important maritime passages, with a special role in regional and global security and economic affairs. Iran’s approach to the strategic waterway, he said, is based on responsibility and the preservation of security, stability and the interests of regional states.
President Pezeshkian also praised Iranian seafarers, saying their strong presence in maritime waters over the past year ensured that the country’s vital lifelines remained operational. He said coordination among the government, private sector and security forces had helped overcome obstacles.
The president also highlighted marine science and environmental protection, saying future maritime development requires universities, research, technology and serious attention to marine ecosystems.
He called for greater participation by shipping companies, fishing communities, ports and maritime industries, scientific institutions and coastal communities, emphasizing the need to reduce barriers, improve infrastructure and facilitate investment.
He said understanding seas, developing new technologies, improving maritime safety and protecting marine ecosystems are investments in Iran’s future generations.
President Pezeshkian concluded by congratulating seafarers and maritime workers and honoring those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
