Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran seeks independence, development, stability and progress for Lebanon, emphasizing Tehran"s longstanding support for greater cooperation and interaction among regional countries and the resolution of disputes through dialogue and mutual respect.
President Pezeshkian and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam discussed regional developments, Lebanon"s sovereignty and stability, and the consequences of continued Israeli attacks during a meeting on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Iranian president highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Iran and Lebanon, stressing the importance of friendly relations and constructive cooperation between the two countries. He also praised the Lebanese people"s historic resistance to Israeli occupation and aggression.
President Pezeshkian also outlined the dimensions and consequences of the acts of aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran, warning that such approaches could have repercussions for regional and global security and stability. He said disregard for the principles and rules of international law would contribute to the spread of insecurity and instability in the region.
He further stressed that Iran supports expanding relations with all regional countries while respecting their national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tehran, he said, remains committed to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of nations and opposes coercion and pressure against independent countries.
Prime Minister Salam, for his part, pointed to the long history of relations between Iran and Lebanon, describing the ties as deeply rooted. He said Beirut seeks healthy, balanced and constructive relations with Tehran.
The Lebanese prime minister also outlined his government"s priorities, emphasizing the need to end the occupation and secure Israel"s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, halt attacks and aggression, and strengthen the authority and sovereignty of the Lebanese state.
The two sides also exchanged views on the latest regional and Lebanese developments and discussed stronger bilateral and regional cooperation to promote lasting peace, stability and security.
