Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran has consistently been open to dialogue, but the United States must be urged to honor its commitments.
In a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Pezeshkian said that on several occasions, negotiations were followed by actions that derailed the diplomatic process and ultimately led to war. He added that Iran had defended itself in response.
During the high-level meeting, both sides discussed mutual relations, regional security, and the repercussions of recent military escalations involving the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.
The Iranian president underscored Tehran's readiness to expand bilateral relations and broader cooperation with European nations while addressing the root causes of existing diplomatic strains.
Highlighting the historical ties between Tehran and European capitals, President Pezeshkian stated that Iran and the Netherlands previously maintained favorable relations, yet certain factors led to the current impasse.
Prime Minister Jetten acknowledged the historical background of Dutch-Iranian ties and underlined the necessity of adopting viable mechanisms to overcome existing barriers. He also drew attention to critical regional developments, including maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the urgency of easing tensions and steering the region toward lasting stability.
Concluding the talks, both sides agreed on sustaining regular diplomatic consultations, exploring practical solutions to reduce regional friction, and establishing the necessary groundwork to foster constructive and multifaceted bilateral cooperation between Tehran and Amsterdam.
