Iranian president calls for stronger Islamic cooperation to foster regional stability, growth

Speaking during a meeting in Tehran on Friday with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz and his accompanying delegation, President Pezeshkian thanked the Turkish government and people for their condolences and support. The delegation traveled to the Iranian capital to attend a memorial ceremony honoring the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

President Pezeshkian said Turkey’s expressions of sympathy reflected the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties between the two neighboring Muslim nations. He also stressed the importance of expanding bilateral relations and transforming political goodwill into practical cooperation across multiple sectors.

The Iranian president criticized recent aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran, saying the actions violated the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law, and humanitarian norms. He said the conflict resulted in the martyrdom of senior officials, military commanders, scientists, and civilians, while those responsible continue to present themselves internationally as defenders of human rights.

President Pezeshkian argued that the Israeli regime has played a destabilizing role in regional affairs over recent decades and said it is seeking to deepen divisions among Islamic countries. He added that greater unity among Muslim nations would reduce opportunities for foreign interference and help strengthen regional security and prosperity.

According to the president, Islamic countries possess significant shared religious, cultural, and civilizational foundations that can support expanded cooperation in scientific, economic, political, cultural, and security fields. He said closer coordination would contribute to sustainable development and lasting regional stability.

Yilmaz conveyed condolences from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Iranian leadership and people. He said the martyrdom of Iranian citizens during the recent conflict, including schoolchildren, had deeply saddened the Turkish public.

The Turkish official said Ankara had worked diplomatically with regional partners, including Qatar and Pakistan, to help contain tensions and support efforts to end the fighting. He welcomed the Iran-US memorandum of understanding to end war and expressed hope it would lead to lasting and comprehensive peace across the region.

He also noted that concerns over energy routes and maritime security, including developments involving the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrated how regional instability could affect the global economy.

Yilmaz said Turkey supports expanding cooperation with Iran in trade, energy, transit, investment, and other sectors, adding that stronger relations between Tehran and Ankara would help reduce external interference and contribute to regional peace through dialogue, mutual trust, and cooperation.

He also asked President Pezeshkian to convey President Erdogan’s greetings, condolences, and sympathies to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
