Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said shared perspectives between Tehran and New Delhi on regional and international issues could pave the way for expanding strategic cooperation, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and multilateral engagement, particularly within the BRICS framework.
During a phone conversation on Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pezeshkian congratulated India on successfully hosting the BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting and expressed hope that cooperation between Iran and India within the organization would continue to grow.
The president also said Iran is committed to deepening its longstanding relationship with India, describing bilateral ties as being rooted in a long history of mutual respect and friendship. He noted that the two countries possess significant potential to expand cooperation in political, economic, trade, transit, and international affairs.
President Pezeshkian stressed the need for closer coordination and better use of existing capacities to identify and implement new avenues for bilateral cooperation. He added that Tehran and New Delhi share common views on many regional and global issues, particularly within multilateral organizations, and said these converging positions could strengthen comprehensive strategic relations.
Addressing recent regional developments, the president referred to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between Iran and the US to end the recent conflict and reiterated the importance of all parties honoring their commitments. He said Iran remains committed to its obligations and expressed hope that the other side would also implement the MoU in good faith to help establish lasting peace, stability, and security in the region.
President Pezeshkian further emphasized that the international community should support efforts aimed at consolidating peace and ensuring that aggression and the use of force have no place in international relations.
He also thanked the Indian government and Prime Minister Modi for their constructive positions in support of regional peace and stability, expressing hope that responsible countries would work together to prevent attempts by destabilizing actors to undermine regional security.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed India's condolences over the martyrdom of senior Iranian officials and citizens during the recent war and announced that India will dispatch a special delegation to participate in the funeral ceremony of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The prime minister also reaffirmed India's support for initiatives promoting peace and stability in West Asia, describing regional security as essential to global stability.
He also welcomed cooperation among BRICS member states and formally invited President Pezeshkian to attend the upcoming BRICS Leaders' Summit, to be hosted by India, expressing hope that the meeting would further strengthen multilateral cooperation among member countries.
