President in a meeting with Afghan president:

Tehran welcomes deepening ties with Kabul/Cooperation essential for restoring lakes, wetlands in Iran-Afghanistan border area

Iran welcomes deepening Tehran-Kabul cooperation and relations and we hope relations between the two countries promote to desired level, said President Rouhani in a meeting with the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani.

In the meeting that was held on Saturday in Tehran, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no effort in helping the people of Afghanistan in increasing and consolidating security and welfare”.

Stressing that the people of Afghanistan have been grappling with insecurity and instability for at least 40 years, he said: “Iran has always stood by the brave Afghan nation during the ups and downs of the country’s history and will continue to do so”.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to have good relations with Afghanistan, said Rouhani adding: “With regard to being connected to railways, Chabahar Port can also be used by Afghanistan, contributing to cooperation between the two countries in economy, trade and mining”.

“Fortunately, the Islamic Republic of Iran railway has reached Afghan borders and we are willing to witness Iran-Afghanistan borders as the border of friendship and cooperation,” continued Dr Rouhani.

He also referred to terrorism as a common issue for all countries of the region and the world, saying: “Close, more serious cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan is essential for resolving issues such as terrorism”.

President Rouhani also referred to the importance of environment and preserving it, saying: “If lakes and wetlands in Iran-Afghanistan borders do not restore, dust can make serious problems for all residents of these areas”.

“The root of resolving all of these problems is development and advancement because progress and increase in work and living conditions can eliminate many of the issues and problems,” continued the President.

On Afghan migrants living in Iran, Dr Rouhani also said: “With regard to the serious resolve by the governments of Iran and Afghanistan, the issue must be resolved”.

During the meeting, the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani also congratulated Dr Rouhani on his re-election adding: “Afghanistan is determined and willing to have sustainable, durable relations with Iran”.

Appreciating Iran for supporting the Afghan people and government, he said: “Our internal issues in fighting terrorism is now in a good condition, our army has developed significant capabilities in confronting terrorist attacks”.

“The government of Afghanistan is attempting to cooperate with neighbours such as Iran to increase security in its borders, turning them into borders of friendship and cooperation,” said President Ghani.

He also added: “Turning Afghanistan into the connection point linking Iran to Afghanistan’s northern and eastern neighbours is a fundamental goal for us and, in this regard, we welcome extending railways”.
