Dr Hassan Rouhani, late on Wednesday, had separate telephone conversations with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia and called for full respect of the current cease-fire in Karabakh region as well as its precise implementation.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is very sorry about military forces and civilians being killed in two neighbouring and friend countries and is ready to use all its facilities for peacefully resolving the disputes between the two countries through political discussion,” he said.

“Continuation of conflicts is detrimental to the interests of all nations in the region, especially Azerbaijani and Armenian nations” President Rouhani said, adding: “this process is to the detriment of the development of the region”.

Dr Rouhani also urged his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts to do their utmost to ensure that the cease-fire is fully implemented, its process closely monitored, and peace is returned to the borders of the two countries.

He added: “The region is currently facing great crises and terrorists and their supporters are constantly attempting to spread the crisis to the whole region. In such an atmosphere, any kind of tension and conflict can lay the groundwork for them to advance their intentions”.

In these telephone conversations, Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia also explained the conditions of the conflict areas and measures taken for implementation of cease-fire and its maintenance.

They also appreciated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled positions and attempts in resolving the crisis.
