Speaking while receiving the credentials of the new South Korean ambassador to Tehran, Dr Hassan Rouhani said that the two countries had excellent trade and banking relations in the past and South Korea was involved in many important Iranian projects, adding, "In recent years, relations between the two countries have deteriorated due to illegal and oppressive US sanctions, which need to be resolved as soon as possible".

Despite the promises made by South Korea, the banking and financial problems between the two countries still remain, he said, adding, "We still face problems in purchasing medical and pharmaceutical equipment and facilities, and even the COVID-19 vaccine by using our reserves in Seoul banks, while Iran's using of its financial reserves in South Korean banks is a clear right of Iran".

Dr Rouhani added, "The financial problem between Iran and South Korea has had a very bad effect on the trust of the Iranian people in South Korea, because during the difficult conditions of the pandemic, Iranian people could not use their reserves in Korean banks. Therefore, I hope that South Korea compensates for this in future opportunities with intensified efforts".

The new ambassador of South Korea to Tehran presented his credentials to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and stated that he was well aware of the discouragement of the Iranian friends from the relations between Tehran and Seoul, saying, "The current conditions, which are out of our control, have affected the relations between Tehran and Seoul, but today I have a special mission to do my best to strengthen bilateral relations".

"Although we are waiting for the good results of the negotiations related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), South Korea will not waste time and we are preparing the conditions for the further development of bilateral relations," he said.
