Emphasis on deepening Tehran-Belgrade ties/ Iran ready to cooperate with Serbia in fighting COVID/ Iran backs Serbia’s national unity

Referring to the good, cordial relations between Iran and Serbia, as well as the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries' foreign ministers, the President stressed the need to develop and deepen relations in various political, economic and trade fields.

Speaking on Sunday during a meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković, Dr Hassan Rouhani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the national unity of Serbia, emphasising the need to strengthen international cooperation between Tehran and Belgrade.

Dr Rouhani stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran believes in the importance of maintaining peace, stability and security in the Balkans and the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic and racial groups, adding, "Fighting terrorism and establishing peace, stability and security requires cooperation and efforts by all countries”.

Referring to the outbreak of coronavirus in various countries around the world, including Iran and Serbia, the President announced Iran’s readiness for scientific and professional cooperation with Serbia in fighting coronavirus.

Dr Rouhani also referred to the imposition of illegal sanctions and the three-year US economic war against the Iranian nation, saying, "With the changes in the international arena and the desire of the new US administration to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with the complete lifting of sanctions, a new atmosphere will be created for Iran's cooperation and economic interactions with the world, and it is better for friendly countries to try to seize this opportunity”.

During the meeting, the Serbian Foreign Minister stressed that his country has always been determined to have friendly relations with Iran, emphasising the development and deepening of relations between the two countries in areas of mutual interest.

Nikola Selaković added, "We have always supported –and continue to support- the JCPOA and the peaceful goals of the Iran’s nuclear programme, and we hope that the problems related to this international agreement will be resolved as soon as possible".

The Serbian Foreign Minister also conveyed the warm greetings of his country's President to Dr Rouhani, saying, "He is very eager to visit Iran and hopes that with the improvements in the coronavirus conditions, the visit would take place as soon as possible".
