Dr Hassan Rouhani's message is as follows;

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Dear Dr Audrey Azoulay,

Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation;

Dear intellectuals and students;

Ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the esteemed guests, intellectuals, students and all educated domestic and foreign participants who have attended this virtual meeting to celebrate the 1750th anniversary of the establishment of Gundi-shapur University as the oldest university in the world.

Scientific and cultural ties are among the most enduring and lasting ties between nations, because the common result of centuries of life and flourishing coexistence among civilisations. Hence, the wider the scope of scientific and cultural relations, the deeper the friendships and empathy between nations.

Iran has always been promoting science, knowledge development and friendship since antiquity, the evidence of which is the move by UNESCO in declaring the world event of Gundi-shapur University as the oldest university in the world with a history of nearly 18 centuries, which is very honorable and admirable work.

The fact that in ancient times, at the height of extremism and fanatical violence, the Iranians established the university of Gundi-shapur, on the door of which reads: "Knowledge and virtue are superior to arms and swords", expresses a deep, civilised attitude of this nation and land in promoting knowledge and wisdom so that nations can promote and highlight human virtues and avoid human vices together.

Today, based on the same teachings of our wise ancestors, we Iranians have two important days in the official calendar of our country called "Interaction and Dialogue with the World", the day when after years of negotiations with major world powers we reached an agreement, and also the day of "World Against Violence and Extremism" which was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly in 2013 at my suggestion.

I believe that the only lasting way for closeness and rapprochement between nations is to return to the clear and pure sources of knowledge and culture -the same way that the ancestors of this land invented with the establishment of the oldest university in the world; a university that was respected by the representatives of all the ancient civilisations in the world, from Greece and Rome to India, China and Egypt.

While appreciating the responsible and wise presence of Dr Audrey Azoulay as the management of UNESCO, I hope that a suitable platform will be provided for the revival of the world's oldest university, Gundi-shapur, which is the ancestor of the world's universities today, because this heritage belongs to all humanity and it is the responsibility of all of us to protect it.

Finally, I would like to thank the organisers of this important world congress, especially the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and Gundi-shapur University, who have spread the pleasant aroma of that ancient university in the national and international stages after centuries.

Good luck
