Speaking on Thursday at the unveiling ceremony of 4 infrastructure projects in the field of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology worth 2.28 trillion tomans, Dr Hassan Rouhani said, "I am very happy that we have arrived to the destination of digital economy, and considering that a large part of the country's economy is digital, we must note that today digital economy is a large and important space for the country".

"Traditional economy is changing and evolving into a digital economy. Today, in our country and all over the world, the economy is evolving and traditional economy is transforming into a digital economy," he said.

The President added, "For example, a farmer can see its business space from home using a mobile phone, make plans and see what the road condition is if he wants to go to his farm".

Referring to the importance of cyberspace and the Internet in providing services to people in various fields such as agriculture, health and various fields of service to the people, the President said, "In digital economy and using cyberspace and the Internet, providing services are faster, more accurate, and less expensive, and this model is more reliable".

Dr Rouhani added, "In these difficult times with the outbreak of coronavirus and COVID-19, the opportunity for the development of information technology became clearer for the people, and many affairs and services were provided using information technology and the cyberspace".

"Now, the health sector is to a large extent electronic and we have e-records of health. In the recent screening process, it could help us a lot. We did not need to go to people's house, instead, their electronic records were referred to," said Rouhani.

Stating that information technology plays a role in the political process, the president said, "Information technology plays an important role in campaigning and informing the people, and even people's participation in the elections".

"The issue of transparency and the fight against corruption is one of the most important issues that can be overcome through cyberspace and the electronic system, and it cannot be done in traditional ways," said the President.

Dr Rouhani emphasised, "If we want to compete with other countries in economy, we have no choice but to develop this space".

He continued, "In some countries, 14 per cent of their GDP was from knowledge-based and digital economy. In our country, we have reached 6.5 per cent and this is a good figure".

"At the same time, this internet space and cyberspace have fundamentally transformed the situation in the country. That is, it has changed the lifestyle and the relationships and how friends contact each other," said the President.

He continued, "The last and final piece of advice is e-government. One of the goals of the 11th and 12th governments was to make e-government more complete, so that people could easily get their services done without having to travel".

Dr Rouhani said, "For example, if a person wants to get a building permit, he must do all the steps when he enters the Internet and cyberspace. So e-government and open communications and inexpensive, safe and reliable cyberspace are important for people".
