President Ahmadinejad made the remark in a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on the sidelines of the 8th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

Highlighting the impact of foreign intervention on recent South Ossetia events, President Ahmadinejad said ultra-regional powers' intervention is the root cause of many regional problems.

He said presence of the US and some of its allies in the region and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan have provoked extremism and tension in the region.

He went on to say that Zionists and their allies are behind growing terrorism and drugs transit in the region.

Regarding their common interests and the threats facing both countries, Iran and Russia should upgrade mutual cooperation to check many regional tensions, he added.

He announced that Tehran is ready to cooperate with Russia in energy domains and implement mutual accords.

He added that Iran is ready to promote economic relations with Russia in the best possible manner.

He congratulated the Russian counterpart on his election to the presidential post.

Medvedev for his part briefed the Iranian president on latest Georgia developments and condoled President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian nation on Bishkek passenger plane crash, as a result of which a number of Iranians were killed.
