Speaking at the opening ceremony of Qazvin-Rasht Railway on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani appreciated friendly, neighbouring countries such as Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Iraq, adding, “The Qazvin-Rasht Railway had many complexities in terms of engineering, but was run in the best way possible”.

“It is an honour that this very important project has been designed and carried out by Iranian engineers despite all its complexities,” he said.

Iran’s railway will be connected to Iraq soon, said Rouhani, adding, “Iran’s railway has been connected all the way to China, making neighbourly bonds deeper”.

“Developing rail links with neighbours is a sign of sanctions policy against Iran,” said the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He continued, “We are very happy that this railway can be a very important and strategic one in the region”.

Dr Rouhani added, “Operation of this railway and connecting it to Astara can connect the Persian Gulf to the north of the country, the Caucasus, Russia, and eastern and northern Europe”.

Referring to the tripartite summit with Russia and Azerbaijan attending, he said, “In that summit, we talked about transportation of goods via the railway to Europe as well as the countries in the Southeast Iran and Africa”.

Stating that Tehran-Rasht route will be down to 4 hours through the railway, the President appreciated the efforts and hard work of Ministry of Roads and Urban Development and the Plan and Budget Organisation”.

Dr Rouhani emphasised that economic dimensions are not important in railway connection, adding, “The rail link can strengthen ties between the countries of the region, between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iraq”.

The president emphasised, "This is a politically valuable move to strengthen relations between the countries, and today, we are reaching not only the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, but also to China via the Incheh Borun railway”.

This fact indicates that unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran are not effective, he said, adding, "The peoples and states of the region have decided to have brotherly, friendly ties with each other, and those who want to disrupt the relations between the countries of the region have not succeeded, and will not be successful”.
