Speaking by telephone with the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel late on Thursday, Dr Hassan Rouhani said: “Iran’s interests in important issues related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) such as selling oil, gas and petrochemicals, as well as banking relations must be clearly and explicitly determined and guaranteed”.

He added: “These issues, which can help to keep JCPOA, must be finalised in a few weeks in the meeting of foreign ministers of Iran and European countries”.

Offering congratulations to Merkel for her re-election, Dr Rouhani continued: “We welcome further development of relations between the two countries”.

He also referred to the constructive and effective role of Germany in negotiations that led to the deal and said: “The United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the deal was a crude, unconventional act against the international laws”.

“If an agreement that is approved by the Security Council of the United Nations by a resolution is violated this way, its international consequences will be harmful,” he continued.

He also referred to cooperation between Iran and Germany in regional issues, saying: “With its security and stability-building approach, Iran has always tried to reduce tensions in the region and by no means favours new tensions in the region”.

On Iran’s advisory presence in Syria, the President said: “The fight that Iran had alongside the Iraqi and Syrian people against ISIS terrorists, leading to relative security in Syria and good security in Iraq is beneficial to the region, entire world and Europe”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed regret over US’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal and stressed: “The United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA is something that has happened but we should deal with it logically and the European Union will stay committed to it and invites Iran to do the same”

“Keeping the JCPOA is very important for Europe,” she continued.

The German Chancellor also called for deepening of relations between the two countries.
