Speaking at the ceremony held for the start of “Omid” Nationwide Plan for Urban Reconstruction on Thursday, Dr Hassan Rouhani said: “The most important principle that the government must seek in the housing sector is protecting people’s lives and well-being”.

Stressing that people living in old houses must be easily provided with strong, safe housing, the President said: “A housing with 20 per cent more floor area will be given to everyone living in old houses”.

Appreciating the 10-day Fajr celebration to the entire Iranian nation, especially the Army, Dr Rouhani said: “The brave Air Force personnel’s allegiance with Imam Khomeini (RA) brought hope for victory and foiled the plots of the US”.

“Drought is the cry of the sky and earthquake the cry of the earth,” said Rouhani stressing that all organs and the government must be ready to deal with them.

He also went on to say: “Our housing must include Iranian culture and our social traditions,” he said, adding that reconstruction of old houses must be neighbourhood-based.

Stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and the newspapers around the country should inform the people in time, he said: “This can increase the cooperation of those living in old houses with the government”.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran also went on to say: “The residents of old houses only need to give their old house to get a new, safe house”.

The government is not a good business entity and constructor, everything must be handed over to people, said the President adding: “Public businesses must be handed over to people themselves”.

He also said: “In addition to reconstruction of houses, the quality of living in neighbourhoods will also increase”.

Emphasising that it is all authorities’ great responsibility to provide housing for the young generation, Dr Rouhani said: “The most important message of the recent earthquakes is reconstruction of old neighbourhoods as fast as possible”.

The entire infrastructural affairs of the new neighbourhoods will be carried out by the government and municipalities, continued President Rouhani adding: “The municipality or the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development give the land and the banks will be required to provide constructors with loan”.

“The nationwide urban reconstruction scheme is the government’s gift to people in 10-day Fajr Celebration,” the President said, describing the housing sector as the driving force of employment.

He went on to stress that the urban reconstruction scheme is not governmental, but the plan that the government is seeking to implement, adding: “If the residents of these old neighbourhoods want to do the reconstruction themselves, the government will give the same amount of loans”.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran also said: “I call on all public institutions to help and contribute to the reconstruction plan”, appreciating all organs, banks and institutions that step forward in carrying out the scheme.
